Between Days

I had the opportunity to record something very important to me personally while being in Bosnia last month. I know that in my last post I said that my next project would be a short film. One that was going to be carefully planned down to every detail before recording any footage. This was the total opposite. I had no intentions of recording anything while being down there.

Luckily, I took my camera along anyway, mainly to take some pictures of Sarajevo and my relatives. Then after staying with my granddad in Sarajevo it really struck me how one can find beautiful stories in the lives of people you already know and in people who are close to you. Stories we somehow take for granted.

My grandparents, Abdulah and Sehaveta, had to leave Bosnia back in the beginning of the 90's because of the Yugoslavian war. They ended up in Norway and lived there for 12 years until Sehavata got so ill that she had to be put in a nursing home. Due to not understanding the language very well and because they never really felt at home in Norway, they decided to move back to Bosnia. Abdulah now lives in Sarajevo while Sehaveta stays at a nursing home 90 kilometers from there in the city of Travnik. Every week he travels two hours by bus to visit her.

At first I had trouble deciding how to exactly make the film, how to portray the story in the best way possible, but in the end decided on doing a short documentary. It's my most personal and important work yet so I really hope you enjoy it.

Here, At the End of All Things

I have decided to make a short film about a boy that travels to another world under his bed. The world is falling apart and he is the only one who can save it. Yes, it has been seen a thousand times before. Yes, it probably sounds pretty bland and uninspiring at this point. But somehow I have a feeling that it will end up being different and special - at least for me personally. I have all these great images and scenes in my head, the hard part now is to get everything to fit together and make sense.

For the first time I don't want to rush things and begin before a proper preparation. I want to plan every detail before I record a single second of footage. This is going to be my first serious attempt at making a short film.

I will keep you updated. Until then, listen to some great music:

Vacationer - one of my favorite upcoming bands - have just released a new track today called "Gone". I used their first song, "Trip" for my Paper Tiger video, and this one has pretty much the same relaxed, daydreamy sound to it. Definitely a band worth following.

Balam Acab, the project of 20-year-old Alec Koone, released an excellent album last month called "Wander/Wonder". It has a very atmospheric, almost otherworldly feeling to it - with drowsy beats and distant, echoing vocals similar to those of Burial.

A fitting soundtrack for sleepless nights and for the many upcoming rainy months.

"The feel of the experience is the important thing, not the ability to verbalize or analyze it."
- Stanley Kubrick
Sometimes it's frustratingly hard to translate thoughts and ideas into words and action. At least there's always good music to ease your mind a bit:
